What is Acid Reflux?

Acid reflux happens when stomach acid flows back into the food pipe (esophagus). This can cause a burning feeling in the chest area, known as heartburn. It happens when the muscle at the bottom of the esophagus (lower esophageal sphincter) doesn’t close properly. This allows stomach acid to travel up, irritating the lining of the esophagus. Acid reflux can be triggered by certain foods, drinks, or being overweight. It’s common and can usually be managed with lifestyle changes or medications to reduce stomach acid. Severe cases might need further treatment to prevent complications like ulcers or esophagus damage.

Causes of Acid Reflux

Weak lower esophageal sphincter (LES) – When this muscle doesn’t close properly, acid flows back up.

Eating large meals – Overeating can put pressure on the stomach.

Spicy or fatty foods – These can relax the LES and increase acid.

Caffeine and alcohol – Both can weaken the LES and cause reflux.

Lying down after eating – This makes it easier for acid to move upward.

Obesity – Extra weight can push stomach acid up.

Smoking – Weakens the LES and increases acid production.

Pregnancy – Hormonal changes and pressure on the stomach.

Certain medications – Some pain relievers and blood pressure drugs.

Symptoms of Acid Reflux

Regurgitation – Sour or bitter-tasting acid backing up into the throat or mouth.
